"50 Years After the Fall: A Story of Escape, Resilience, and Becoming" | Documentary

From February 2025 to December 2025, I led my Vietnamese Culture Club to use our awarded Asian American Stories grant to produce this three-part documentary series honoring the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. Under our belt is months of design brainstorms, research, and interviews with Vietnamese American community members, including politicians, historians, film-makers, entrepreneurs in the food industry, nail salon owners, and youth.

Through a youth lens, I aimed to spotlight refugee histories and intergenerational trauma to help provide a full account of the Vietnamese American experience and educate students. The series was showcased at a school-wide event and the Silicon Valley Community Media’s Student Documentary Screening: Asian American Stories.

Viet Foodies | 1st Place Youth Division Winner of One-Minute Video Contest

Founding Gunn’s first Vietnamese affinity club, I learned to build communities from oddly shaped parts. It started as a cultural refuge for four Vietnamese members, then grew to 40+ multi-ethnic students in a year. To capture this transformation, I produced a one-minute video and competed in the national Asian American Stories Contest, winning first place.

Directing the video lessened my worries of inconsistent commitment from non-Vietnamese students–the helping hands behind leadership forums and cross-cultural performances. Distinguished judges evaluated this video. It earned recognition from the Alameda County Assessor and a $5K grant to produce another multicultural documentary. The piece showcased leadership in building inclusive communities through shared storytelling.

1000 Books Before Kinder | Video Feature for International Children Assistance Network

This is a video I produced and published on ICAN's website (with 100+ hits) and social media (with 2,300 views) was my first foray into multimedia features. After conducting eight interviews with the nonprofit's educators and families, I sharpened my photo and camera skills to capture the everyday environment. Candid shots were not easy when these kids could sense a camera from three rooms away.
